Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. The Gilman Scholarship Program is especially interested in supporting students who are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, as well as students who are studying abroad in non-traditional locations.
This scholarship gives preference to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. These groups include, but are not limited to minority and first-generation college students.
If you are studying abroad on an ISEP Exchange or Direct program, check out their comprehensive list of scholarship offerings. All students who are applying to ISEP should apply for the ISEP Community Scholarship. If you need assistance with paying the application fee, you may be eligible for the ISEP Accessibility Scholarship. If you are going on a language immersion program with ISEP, you can apply for the ISEP Founders Fellowship.
This scholarship is open to individuals, ages 18-30, who will engage in an educational or service learning component during their trip. Eligible candidates must also meet specific financial need requirements. More information can be found at www.hiusa.org/travel-scholarships.
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. Students receive a full scholarship to participate in this program.
Joy Worldwide Inc. Study Abroad Scholarship
Joy Worldwide Inc. is a non-profit 501c3 corporation that provides education, advocacy, and scholarship programs for African American students who are U.S. citizens pursuing study abroad opportunities. Their scholarships range from $500 to $750 and goes towards study abroad programs and incidentals.
American Women’s Club (AWC) Scholarship Foundation
The AWC scholarship foundation makes awards to female US citizens who plan to study in Sweden.
IEI-Asia Institute Scholarship
Student applicants should be seeking to participate in a global learning experience in Asia.
Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan
Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite.
Freeman-ASIA
The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Applicants must currently receive financial aid or have verifiable need for financial assistance to study.
The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Japanese and American undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study abroad program or international study in either the United States or Japan. The scholarship will support the cost of attendance to the institution or study abroad program of the applicant’s choice and grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications.
Monbukagakusho (MEXT), the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology offers four different scholarships for non-Japanese nationals wishing to study in Japan. Only U.S. citizens living within the following states can apply for a MEXT Scholarship at this Consulate: IL, IN, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD, WI. U.S. citizens living in other states should apply through the consulate responsible for their state. Non-US citizens should apply through the Japanese embassy in their country of citizenship.

Hellenic Foundation – American College Greece
Two full scholarships covering tuition, housing and roundtrip airfare to Greece will be awarded to undergraduate Greek-Americans from the greater Chicago area. Priority will be given to undergraduate Chicagoland Greek-American students (parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents born in Greece), who have never or rarely visited Greece, with 3.0 GPA or higher. All recipients must be planning to study at The American College Greece.
Boren Award
The Boren Award provides a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
